FAQs

Can I start exercise if I haven’t exercised before?

It’s never too late to start exercising.  As long as you start slowly, you’ll begin to see and feel the benefits that physical activity can have on your body and wellbeing.  However, if you feel out of shape, or you’re recovering from an injury or worried about an existing condition, have a discussion with your GP before you start.

What kit do I need for exercise?

You do not need to spend a lot of money to exercise for the first time. All you need is a T-shirt, shorts / leggings and a pair of comfortable training shoes. There’s no need to spend a huge amount by purchasing an expensive brand.

Women should also consider wearing a sports bra as it is sturdier than a regular bra and provides additional support.

What if I’m not sure about what exercise to try?  I’m not sure what I would enjoy?

Get in touch and we can arrange a chat so you can gain further information regarding our sessions and hopefully find one suitable for you.  We also keep in regular contact with lots of other local exercise providers from Boxing to Nordic Walking to Ariel Trapeze!  We’re great at signposting if you want to try something new.

Is walking really exercise?  What benefits does it have?

  • It improves circulation by bringing up the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and strengthening the heart.

  • It strengthens your muscles.  As well as the obvious leg and abdominal muscles you can also give your arms a workout too when you walk.

  • Studies have shown that it can improve sleep.

  • It can improve your energy levels by increasing your breathing which in turn allows oxygen to travel faster throughout the blood stream.

  • Walking releases natural painkilling endorphins which in turn can lighten your mood.  Even more so in one of our social walking groups.

Other people may be able to do this but can I?

Yes you can!  However, you may need a little help and that’s the main aim of More Than A Run.  We’ll show you that you can do it, make you want to do it and enjoy it.  Have a read through our testimonials and come and see for yourself.

Do I need special kit for running?

Running requires little equipment although a good pair of running shoes that suit your foot type may help improve comfort and prevent some injuries.  You can get advice from a specialist running retailer who will carry out an assessment to help find the right shoe for you.  For women, a sports bra will provide a good balance between support and comfort.

I’ve not tried running since leaving school, what if I can’t run?

We were born to run!  It is one of the most natural forms of exercise and scientific evidence suggests that the human body evolved quite literally to run, including long distances.  Come and join us for some walking first or if you feel ready pop along to one of our beginner groups.  Just remember to take it slowly.

How often should I run when starting out?

Try running twice a week when starting out and make sure you leave a couple of rest days in between.  Joining a running group is the perfect way to commit to running regularly.

What are the benefits of running?

Where do I start?  There are loads!

  • One of the biggest benefits of running is the mood boosting effects.  You can also make your runs social by joining a running group or taking part in regular Parkruns or Trust10’s held locally.

  • It helps to build strong bones which can help protect from osteoporosis related fractures.

  • It strengthens muscles and increases lean body mass.

  • It improves your cardiovascular fitness.

  • It burns calories.  Weight loss is a prime incentive for many beginners and weight maintenance for regular runners.

  • It can regulate cholesterol levels.
